An introduction to the cream-coloured sands of Bai Khem

At the southern tip of the island, in An Thoi ward, a 3.5 km arc of sand curves between low mountains. This is Phu Quoc Khem Beach, known locally as Bai Khem, and its sand is the first thing most visitors notice: creamy, powder-like and soft underfoot.

Good to know

The curve of the shoreline shields the bay from strong offshore winds, so the water stays calm through much of the year. The sea is clear and emerald green, and the shallows suit swimming, kayaking or simply sitting by the shore.

Conclusion

For many years the area was a restricted military zone. That limited access held back development, and although it is now open to visitors, the beach keeps a quiet, natural feel. Part of the shore is a designated public area, while other sections belong to private developments, so check where you are allowed to settle before laying down a towel.
